The Black Family Tapestry Wallpaper — What It Is and Where It Works
Last updated: 12 August 2026
The Black Family Tapestry is the wizarding family tree that covers the drawing-room wall at number twelve, Grimmauld Place. In Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix it is the object Sirius Black stands in front of to explain his family to Harry — and the thing he has been burned off.
What the design actually shows
A genealogy rendered as a tapestry: names, dates and portrait roundels linked by branching lines, in faded golds and greens against a dark ground. Scorch marks stand where relatives were removed for marrying Muggles or otherwise disgracing the family. The burn holes are part of the artwork, not damage.
MinaLima designed the original prop for the films. This wallpaper reproduces that artwork rather than illustrating it second-hand, which is what separates it from a fan print.
Where it works in a house
This is the design that reads as a heritage textile first and a film reference second, which is why it is the one that most often ends up in a living room or study rather than a themed bedroom. The deep tones absorb light, so it suits a media room or a room with a single lamp better than a bright north-facing space.
It rewards being seen close up. Put it where people sit, not at the end of a corridor.
