Peel & Stick vs Paste-the-Wall: The Honest Comparison

These are the two easiest wallpaper systems ever made, and shops rarely explain the difference honestly. Here it is: peel and stick is easier to remove; paste-the-wall is easier to live with. The right choice depends on your wall and how long you want it up.

How each one works

Peel and stick is a self-adhesive film: peel the backing, smooth it on, reposition if needed. No paste, no table, minimal mess.

Paste-the-wall (most of our range) means you roll paste onto the wall and hang the dry paper straight onto it. It's dramatically easier than old-fashioned pasted paper — no soaking, no booking time, half the mess — and it's how our paste-the-wall guide shows.

Where peel and stick wins

  • Rentals — removal is clean and paste-free (see our renters' guide).
  • Short-term looks — kids' phases, photo backdrops, a nursery you'll redo in three years.
  • Small, smooth surfaces — cupboard backs, alcoves, laundry splashback zones.

Where paste-the-wall wins

  • Longevity — paste bonds hold flat for years; self-adhesive edges can lift with heat and time, especially in sun-struck rooms.
  • Large walls and murals — big panels align better when the wall is pasted; self-adhesive panels fight you on repositioning.
  • Slightly imperfect walls — paste is forgiving; self-adhesive film telegraphs every bump and needs a very smooth surface.
  • Bathrooms, kitchens and humid rooms — a pasted non-woven or vinyl paper copes better with moisture cycles. See wallpaper in bathrooms & kitchens.

Does peel and stick work on plaster walls?

On painted, sealed, fully-cured plaster — yes. The paint needs to be sound (not flaking or chalky) and at least 3–4 weeks old; on fresh paint, self-adhesive film can pull the paint off when removed, which defeats the purpose. On bare, unpainted or porous plaster — no; seal and paint first. Textured render is a poor match for peel and stick full stop; go paste-the-wall there.

Our honest bottom line

If you own your home and want the wall to look good for a decade, choose paste-the-wall. If you rent or you're decorating for a season of life, choose peel and stick — and test a $10 sample on your actual wall before committing either way.
