Striped Wallpaper
The stripe is the little black dress of wallpaper: it has never once been out of style, and it fixes rooms. This collection holds 32 striped designs, most of them Sandberg's Swedish stripes alongside Casamance, Långelid/von Brömssen and Romo, sold by the roll from $145. Vertical stripes visually raise a low ceiling, wider horizontal bands stretch a narrow room, and a soft two-tone ticking adds structure to a bedroom without adding pattern. Every design is available as a $10 sample, with $5 postage within Australia.

Buying guide and questions we are asked
How to choose a striped wallpaper
Start with the width of the stripe, not the colour. Fine pinstripes and ticking read as texture from across the room and behave like a plain; broad bands are a statement and want a large, uninterrupted wall. Then the contrast: tone-on-tone stripes, stone on cream or grey on white, are the ones people live with for a decade, while navy-and-white leans Hamptons and black stripes are pure statement. Stripe width is deceptive on screen, so check the repeat on the product page and line the sample up against your skirting before you decide. Our striped wallpaper guide goes into more detail.
The designs Australians order most
Sandberg's Gustav was one of the two most ordered designs in the store over the last twelve months. Behind it come Rand and Magnus, then Estelle, a rust-red stripe, and Sam. All five are Sandberg, which says something about how well Swedish stripes suit Australian light.
What we stock and how it is sold
Twenty-eight of the 32 are rolled wallpapers. Sandberg rolls are 53 cm wide and 10.05 m long, non-woven and hung paste-the-wall, and the others list their width and length under Product Details. Most plain stripes have little or no pattern repeat, so there is less waste per roll than with a large floral. Rolls are printed to order, so allow three to four weeks; express delivery is available.
Before you order
Measure, run the roll calculator, and order the sample. Related: Sandberg wallpaper, coastal and nautical for the Hamptons look, black and white, and calm and gentle for the quietest tone-on-tone options.
Questions we are asked about striped wallpaper
Vertical or horizontal?
Vertical to make a ceiling feel higher, horizontal to make a narrow room feel wider. In a room with a standard 2.4 m ceiling, vertical is the safer choice.
Do stripes work in a small room?
Yes. A fine tone-on-tone stripe is one of the best small-room papers there is, because it adds interest without a motif. Save broad, high-contrast bands for a wall you can see from a distance.
How do I keep the stripes straight on an old wall?
Hang the first strip to a plumb line, not to the corner, and check every third strip. If the walls are badly out, a stripe will show it, and a textured or small-pattern paper is kinder. Our guide to hanging wallpaper walks through it.
Can I get a sample first?
Yes. Samples are A$10 each plus A$5 postage within Australia, A$18 to New Zealand and A$35 elsewhere, sent by letter mail and usually with you within a week.
